Position Title: Youth Librarian
Reports to: Library Director
Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Library Director, the Youth Services Librarian is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Youth Services and oversees all services to children and teens. Select and organizes materials, designs and implements programs and promotes the library in the schools and in the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manages the daily operations of Youth Services to ensure the highest quality service.
- Oversees the development and implementation of all programs and outreach efforts for youth aged 0 – 18.
- Maintains a welcoming, helpful library atmosphere for patrons and colleagues.
- Creates library promotional materials and displays.
- Evaluates and selects materials for children and teens to ensure the availability of a well-rounded, current collection.
- Catalogs materials for children and teens. Prepares bibliographic and item records to provide access and retrieval for catalog users. Processes materials to make shelf-ready.
- Plans, executes, and evaluates a wide variety of on- and off-site programs for children, teens, and/or their caregivers to heighten library visibility, market the library and its resources, and/or meet community needs.
- Cultivates and maintains relationships within the community, including schools, other town department s and outside organizations, to strengthen the Youth Services program.
- Works at the Circulation desk(s) to provide excellent reference and reader’s advisory service, technology help, circulation and inter-library loan services, as needed.
- Promotes the library, its materials, programs and services via press releases, social media, public speaking, and other forms of written and oral communication.
- Performs basic bookkeeping functions.
- Contributes statistical and narrative reports to the Director, as requested.
- Assists Director in developing departmental budget for materials, supplies and programs, and tracks spending versus budgets.
- Under supervision of the Director, maintains assigned web pages on the library’s website.
- Searches and applies for grants for children’s- and teen-related programs, services and collections.
- Pursues professional development opportunities to maintain knowledge of the field.
- Enthusiastically and energetically advocates for Youth Services.
- Deals tactfully and courteously in all interactions with the public and within the organization.
- Has a cooperative team spirit.
- Upholds all confidentiality rights of patrons and patron records.
- Upholds established library policies and procedures.
- Assists Director in management of youth services volunteers.
- Assumes responsibility for operation of the library in the absence of Director and Assistant Director.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required by the Position:
- Knowledge of library principles, practices, tools, policies and procedures.
- Possesses comprehensive knowledge related to youth popular culture, literature, media, educational, and technological trends in addition to showing the initiative to continually develop one’s knowledge of these areas.
- Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature, developmental stages, and interests.
- Proficient knowledge of library, office, and consumer technology, including hardware, software, networks, databases, and the internet. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel , and PowerPoint is essential.
- Knowledge of the role of social media in society. Ability to effectively leverage social media to promote the library and its services.
- Possesses a reasonable level of skill in the use of mobile devices, particularly in relation to providing library services and digital materials access.
- Skill in creative programming, presentations and displays.
- Skill in organizational planning and budgeting.
- Ability to set goals, determine priorities, and follow through projects to completion.
- Ability to handle multiple activities or interruptions at once and prioritize work tasks prudently.
- Ability to provide customer service to the public in a friendly and accurate manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to keep good records.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups.
- Ability to communicate with all age groups.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with the public, supervisors, subordinates, Trustees, Friends, other Town employees, and community groups.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
Normal library environment. Frequent interruptions. May spend periods at computer terminal or on telephone requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity. Regularly required to walk, stand, bend, reach, and lift books and other materials. Must be able to safely carry items or maneuver book carts weighing at least 10 pounds. There will also be kneeling, crouching, singing, dancing finger play and other physical activities involved with interacting with children. Position is expected to participate in decorating the children’s area and teen room in a creative manner that may include climbing ladders and other tasks necessary to accomplish that goal. A valid license is required. Driving a car to outside events may be required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion or anticipated completion of Master’s Degree in library science from an ALA-accredited library school preferred. Bachelor's Degree required.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the job—including experience in programming for children and teens.
- A background check is required.
This is a full-time (35 hours per week). Evening and occasional weekend hours are required. The regular schedule is MWF 10 - 5 and Tuesday/Thursday 1 - 8.
Salary Range - $19.50 to $23.00 per hour. This job includes full insurance benefits, pension, vacation pay, holiday pay and paid sick time.
